The “Ukrainian Insurance House” Insurance Company since May 11, 2007 has launched paying the insurance compensations to the “Stolichny Express” (Metropolitan Express Dnipropetrovsk - Kyiv) passangers who suffered from the railroad wreck that happened on May 2.
Michael Berlin, Chairman of the Board expressed deep gratitude to the “Ukrzaliznytsya” top-management for cooperation in arranging the payment process. He marked the efficiency and accuracy of railroad administration work.
Thanks to the cooperation with “Ukrzaliznytsya” the best convenient conditions were provided for the people who applied for the insurance compensations. The station administration offered a separate reception room for suffered passangers, where station employees formalized all necessary documents, and insurance company representatives received insurance compensation applications with ready-made documents package. In addition, the “Ukrazaliznytsya” opened a separate cash-desk for insurance compensation payments which allowed the people to receive money within a fraction of moment. This approach significantly reduced time necessary for document processing and compensation receipt. Furthermore the passangers do not need to visit the insurance company office after all documents are collected, since the payments are made at the station. Therefore due to the well-coordinated cooperation between the “Ukrzaliznytsya” and Insurance Company the payment procedure has been significantly sped up.
Since May 10, 2007 the insurance company representative business hours are
Monday – Friday 9.00 a.m. – 9.00 p.m.
Saturday – Sunday 9.00 a.m. – 3.00 p.m.
As of May 17, 2007 75 “Metropolitan Express” passangers had applied for the compensation. 71 inidividuals have received funds and 4 are in the process. The maximum amounts are 1428 hryvnyas paid to a citizen of Dnipropetrovsk and 918 hyrvnyas paid to a Kyiv student. Both of them suffered from brain concussion and became disabled for a certain period of time.
The insurance money in bills (500 untaxed minimum wages equal to 8500 hryvnyas) is indicated according to the Cabinet of Ministers Decree No 959 as of August 14, 1996.
On April 20, 2007 the Cabinet of Ministers introduced significant changes to the above indicated Decree, in particular regarding the amount of insurance money (now it is equal to 3000 untaxed wages or 51,000 hryvnyas). The Decree envisages the amount indicated in the bill to be paid in full only in case of the death accident.
Though the Insurance Company pecuniary obligations to the train passangers were specified in the old version of the Decree, the “Ukrainian Insurance House” protecting the victims’ interests passed the decision to pay the insurance compensation in amount of 102 hryvnyas per every day of disablement instead of 17 hryvnyas under the previous conditions.
